You Don’t Always Have To Talk

This one is for all you interviewers out there. Some hosts do this thing where they ask a question and, as the guest is answering it, the host keeps chiming in with words like, “uh huh,” and “right,” and “yup.” Don’t do that. It’s distracting to the viewers and very distracting to the guest. I was recently interviewed over the phone and the host kept saying “right” as I was talking. I suppose it’s better than them saying “wrong” but still, I found it very difficult to concentrate.

Let your guest answer the question, and then ask a follow up. Or if you have to jump in because the answer’s too long, jump in with a question. But don’t make little sound effects mid-answer.

I’m sure the hosts who do this aren’t trying to be rude. They probably don’t even realize they’re doing it. But as I’ve often said, you should always watch your performances on tape because it is the best way to improve. That goes for hosts as well, even ones who have been on camera for years. You may have picked up a bad habit along the way that you’re not aware of and without watching yourself you’ll have no way to know it, and no way to fix it.

So the next time you’re interviewing someone, let them do their thing. It will make for a better conversation for both of you and a better finished product.
