Do Whatever You Need To Get In The Zone

Dave Aizer and Flo Rida

This week’s tip is all about owning your process. Here’s what I mean, before you go on stage or appear on camera you may very well be excited, or nervous. That’s totally normal. And, like an elite athlete, you may feel the need to get your “game face” on. Whatever you need to do to get yourself in the zone, do it.

If it’s push ups, do push ups, if it’s positive self-talk in front of a mirror, find the nearest bathroom and tell yourself how great you are. If you need to scream, go to your car, turn the music up and yell out your anxiety … just don’t lose your voice. Even if you just want a minute to be alone, disappear for a moment and get yourself some “you time.” The only thing that matters is getting you in the right frame of mind to crush your performance. So, do what you have to do to get there, even if other people watch you while you do it. Don’t be self-conscious. Who cares?

Years ago, when I hosted “Slime Time Live” on Nickelodeon, I used to do a set of push ups in front of the crew and audience before we went live. Maybe it was weird, but it became a game and the crew would count the push ups out loud. It gave me an energy boost and, if I’m being honest, made me feel a little more “pumped up” before that camera started rolling. It helped my performance and that’s all that mattered to me, and the show’s crew.

Many great athletes and performers incorporate pregame and preshow rituals into their performances. You should feel empowered to do so as well!
